When it comes to marketing your business in 2014, an online presence is critical. Although I encourage every business to have a website and take advantage of free social media accounts, you don’t necessarily need a website to get found. Google is helping small businesses get found by allowing them to create (or “claim”) a listing for their business, whether it be a brick-and-mortar or a room in your basement. Business owners need to go to Google.com/business and click on the blue “Get on Google” button and follow the easy step by step instructions to either claim a listing that is already online or to create a new one. You can add information about your business including a list of products and services and even photos of your store front, logo or goods. Here is the kicker though – your listing isn’t live until you “verify” it. Google will send you a postcard verification with a PIN code for you to enter. Once your account is verified, your listing is live. If you are a home business, you can choose to omit your address, but you have to provide Google with a valid street address so they confirm you are a real person at a real address. And do you want to know the best part? Google is used for 96% of all online search requests, so by claiming your FREE listing you are marketing your business to 96% of the 97% of people that search online for local goods and services.
